The journal Ecología Política, cuadernos de debate internacional, is calling for proposals of articles for its upcoming issue on militarization.

According to a recent report by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), global military spending has been growing since 2015. In 2024, the average per capita military expenditure worldwide reached its highest level since 1990. This process of militarization, as well as ongoing armed conflicts around the world – from Gaza and Sudan to Ukraine – is reshaping the political agenda, putting geopolitical tensions ahead of the climate crisis. What role does growing militarization play in the multiple environmental and social crises of today?

This issue of Ecología Política seeks to explore the conflicts, transformations and socio-environmental legacies of militarization and armed conflict. This includes not only terrestrial spaces but also maritime and underwater environments, as well as orbital space used by satellites.

In order to address these issues from diverse perspectives, the following thematic areas are proposed:

  • Socio-environmental transformations in areas used by the military: bases, firing ranges, and training grounds
  • Socio-environmental conflicts related to militarized land management
  • Feminist and anticolonial perspectives on militarization
  • Links between militarization and extraction
  • Militarization of the oceans: pollution and underwater surveillance
  • Militarization of space: satellites and environmental data monitoring
  • Military technologies and the production of environmental information
  • Environmental management of military-owned lands
  • Abandoned military infrastructures and ecological legacies
  • Critical perspectives on military environmentalist discourses (“military conservation” or “khaki conservation”)
  • War ecologies
  • Socio-environmental consequences of war, both short- and long-term
  • Environmental destruction as a tactic of war
  • Ecocide
  • Environmental history of war
  • Nature and irregular warfare
  • Greenhouse gas emissions linked to the military and warfare
  • Environmental crises and securitization processes
  • Memorialization and environmental reconstruction after armed conflicts
  • Political ecology and peace processes

The issue will be published in December 2025.
